IBJJF
GiNo-Gi
Federation and competition organization

International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation

Start here for IBJJF championships in the United States, athlete membership, competition rules, and uniform requirements. Its registered-academy and certified-black-belt directories are useful references within the IBJJF system. Check the specific championship page for registration deadlines and divisions.

Do I weigh in wearing the gi?

IBJJF weight limits include the competition uniform. Use the weight chart for your gi or no-gi championship; the first-championship guide says staff call athletes to weigh in when their division starts.

Official reference ↗
Is the bracket single elimination?

The rulebook uses single elimination, with a special three-athlete bracket: the first match’s loser meets the third athlete for the other place in the final. Check your published bracket rather than assuming a second match.

Official reference ↗
Is athlete membership required?

Yes. Registration requires active IBJJF membership under your current belt and academy. Your academy must be registered and have an instructor who can sign the application; start that process before the event deadline.

ADCC
No-Gi
Submission grappling federation

ADCC Submission Fighting World Federation

Follow ADCC's official event listings for Opens, Trials, and championship information. The rules resources cover its submission-grappling format. Read the rules and eligibility for your actual event and experience division; an Open registration is a different decision from a Trials or championship entry.

Where do I confirm a US Open weigh-in?

Read the individual Open page. For example, Louisville’s December 2026 page lists weigh-ins on the preceding Friday, with a separate early window for kids. That schedule is event-specific; confirm your own event’s time, clothing and documents.

Official reference ↗
Does the championship bracket guarantee multiple matches?

ADCC’s general championship rules describe a knockout tournament in which the winner advances. US Opens can publish their own division details; check the event registration and experience category before assuming a match guarantee.

Official reference ↗
What eligibility documents matter for Trials?

ADCC’s competition-format guidance requires an original passport from the country or continent served by the qualifier. Its check-in list also includes ID and the tournament-payment receipt. An Open entry does not establish that you meet a Trials passport requirement.

AJP
GiNo-Gi
Professional competition tour

Abu Dhabi Jiu Jitsu Pro

AJP operates a professional jiu-jitsu competition tour with US stops among its event listings. Use the official calendar to locate a US event, then review that event's gi or no-gi divisions, eligibility, and entry information alongside AJP's competition rules.

Must I wear the gi on the scale?

AJP permits a nontransparent T-shirt with knee-length sport shorts, a T-shirt with gi pants, or a full gi. Bring official photo ID. Weigh-in timing varies by championship, so use its published schedule.

Official reference ↗
Is every AJP division double elimination?

No. The competition system depends on the event level, belt and division. Regional, International and National events generally use single elimination; selected Continental and Grand Slam divisions have different systems. Read the rules attached to your exact event.

Official reference ↗
Do athletes and academies need affiliation?

AJP’s regulations require current-year athlete affiliation and an approved registered academy, including for children. Registration details and membership documents must agree. Resolve a pending affiliation before arriving at weigh-in.

JJWL
GiNo-Gi
Tournament league and organizer

Jiu Jitsu World League

JJWL's website brings together event registration, results, and league standings. For a US tournament, start with its event page and use the rulebook and FAQ to check divisions, uniform requirements, weigh-in procedures, and registration changes before entering.

Do gi and no-gi athletes weigh in the same clothing?

No. JJWL’s FAQ says gi entrants weigh in wearing the gi; no-gi entrants weigh in without it. Use the event’s weigh-in window and change deadline, which can differ from general FAQ examples.

Official reference ↗
How does bracket size change the format?

JJWL lists best-of-three for two entrants and round robin for three. Four-to-fifteen-person adult brackets use double elimination; larger adult brackets and youth splits have separate provisions. Check the actual bracket before estimating your match count.

Official reference ↗
Can siblings share one competitor account?

Every competitor must have an individual JJWL account. The FAQ says to reuse that account for later events. Parents are directed to the spectator area rather than the competition area; check the event’s spectator arrangements.

NAGA
GiNo-Gi
Grappling association and tournament organizer

North American Grappling Association

NAGA runs gi and no-gi tournaments and publishes rules and division guidance for competitors. Its no-gi rules and gi rules are presented separately, so check the format you are entering rather than carrying assumptions from one division into another. The official site links to event registration and results.

Do I need to wear my gi at weigh-in?

NAGA says to weigh in without the gi, wearing at least shorts. One weigh-in covers your entry. Children and teens have specific weigh-in windows; the event page supplies those times and any previous-evening option.

Official reference ↗
Is NAGA still a one-loss-only bracket?

Its FAQ describes a 2025 change: two-person divisions use best-of-three, three-person divisions use round robin, and larger divisions provide a third-place bracket. Injury, withdrawals and other circumstances can still reduce completed matches.

Official reference ↗
Must I belong to an academy to register?

NAGA’s FAQ permits unaffiliated competitors. Its Smoothcomp registration instructions say to choose NO TEAM when you have no team affiliation. Parents and guardians still need the applicable spectator admission; event pages list the price.

Grappling Industries
GiNo-Gi
Tournament organizer

Grappling Industries

Grappling Industries offers gi and no-gi tournaments with published bracket and division rules. Its regular divisions use formats that depend on the number of entrants, while absolute divisions have separate bracket provisions. Read the event page and rules to understand your entry rather than assuming a fixed number of matches.

Must I weigh in twice for gi and no-gi?

No. The rules require one weigh-in for both formats and allow gi competitors to weigh without the gi. There is no weight allowance. Complete check-in and weigh-in at least 60 minutes before your division’s scheduled start.

Official reference ↗
Are absolute divisions also round robin?

No. Regular divisions use a size-dependent system, including best-of-three for two entrants and round-robin groups for larger fields. Absolute divisions use single elimination. Withdrawals can affect the matches actually completed.

Official reference ↗
Which registration details should a parent check?

Register using the athlete’s legal name and birth date, and their age on event day. The rules make proposed youth mergers optional: a parent or coach can decline and withdraw for credit. The official event page contains registration requirements and deadlines.

AGF
GiNo-Gi
Tournament organizer

American Grappling Federation

AGF organizes gi and no-gi tournaments with its own competition rules and competitor guidelines. Use its tournament finder for US locations, then check the event's age and experience divisions, bracket format, and deadlines. Its name identifies the organization; it does not make an academy listing a general coaching credential.

Does the gi count toward my AGF weigh-in?

No. AGF’s January 2026 general rules say all weigh-ins take place without the gi and specify a one-pound allowance. Confirm the event’s weigh-in session and the correct age, rank and weight division before registering.

Official reference ↗
Do regular and Challenger divisions use the same bracket?

No. Regular divisions use best-of-three for two entrants, round robin for three, and double elimination through the path to the finals for larger fields. Challenger divisions have a modified single-elimination format with their own small-bracket rules.

Official reference ↗
What is the USA Grappling membership link on AGF?

AGF presents USA Grappling membership as a separate athlete, coach and academy program. Its information page requires SafeSport training for adult athlete and Grappling Leader members. It does not establish a universal membership requirement for every AGF tournament; check the event entry conditions.

USA Grappling
GiNo-Gi
National grappling federation

USA Grappling

United World Wrestling lists USA Grappling as its US national federation for grappling. This is a resource for the UWW grappling pathway, including gi and no-gi, rather than a universal governing body for every US BJJ academy or tournament. Use USA Grappling for current national-program information and UWW for its rules.

What clothing does the UWW weigh-in rule specify?

The July 2026 UWW grappling rules specify a rash guard and shorts, with license and accreditation at medical control and weigh-in. Use the particular US qualifier’s instructions for its schedule and entry process.

Official reference ↗
Does every US grappling tournament use the UWW bracket?

No. UWW’s official-event system includes elimination with repechage and different pool formats for smaller fields. The rulebook explicitly allows national and international Open events to use another system, including simple elimination.

Official reference ↗
When is an international competitor license required?

The UWW rulebook requires it for the specified international championships and tournaments on the UWW calendar. A US academy membership or domestic event entry is not that license. USA Grappling is the US federation contact for this pathway.

Tap Cancer Out
Gi
Nonprofit tournament organizer

Tap Cancer Out

A charity BJJ circuit that connects competition with fundraising for cancer-fighting organizations. Its listed BJJ Opens use gi divisions; check the individual event for registration choices and the day assigned to adults or youth. Its competition rules include specific differences from IBJJF rules.

Do competitors weigh in with the gi?

The organizer FAQ says the gi is not required on the scale and provides a one-pound allowance. Check your event schedule for its weigh-in window.

Official reference ↗
Will my child have more than one match?

The rules page describes double elimination with exceptions based on bracket size. An older FAQ describes a different format, so ask the event team which bracket applies before relying on a match guarantee.

Official reference ↗
Which age should I use at registration?

Use the competitor’s age on tournament day, according to the organizer FAQ. Adults and youth can have separate competition days, as shown on the calendar.

Official reference ↗
NEWBREED
GiNo-Gi
Tournament circuit

NEWBREED Jiu Jitsu Federation

A competition circuit with gi and no-gi divisions. Its official site provides event registration, division information, weigh-in requirements, and youth competition guidance. Use the organizer calendar for current events; BJJ Station does not automatically import this calendar.

Do I weigh in twice for gi and no-gi?

The rules say competitors weigh in once for both formats, without needing to wear the gi. A one-pound allowance applies; check the event for any Friday weigh-in option.

Official reference ↗
When can I see my bracket?

The FAQ says brackets and schedules are generally published on Smoothcomp the day before the tournament. Check your event’s Brackets & Schedule tab for the current version.

Official reference ↗
Can my child’s division be combined?

The organizer may combine divisions according to turnout. A parent or coach can request female-only youth matches in the registration notes, but the FAQ says this depends on available competitors.

Official reference ↗
The Good Fight
GiNo-Gi
Submission-only tournament circuit

The Good Fight Tournament Circuit

A submission-only gi and no-gi circuit with separate rules for novice, youth, and adult divisions. Start with the exact event page for its venue, registration deadline, weigh-in schedule, and divisions. Sub-Only Worlds has additional entry and division requirements.

Do gi and no-gi competitors weigh in separately?

The Bristol event page says to weigh in without the gi, with a one-pound allowance. Competitors entered in both formats weigh in once by the gi deadline; other events may publish different times.

Official reference ↗
What happens if a child is alone in a division?

The FAQ lists moves in weight or age before staff contact the family to find a solution. Review possible changes with the coach and event team instead of assuming the original bracket will remain unchanged.

Official reference ↗
Is a Smoothcomp profile needed?

The organizer uses Smoothcomp for registration changes and withdrawal credits. Its FAQ links instructions for finding the competitor’s profile ID, which is also needed for certain discount requests.
