Jiu-jitsu in Manhattan: build training into your day

A good Manhattan training plan starts with an ordinary weekday. Picture leaving work, reaching the academy, changing, taking class and getting home. Then ask whether you would happily do it again. The academies below offer different ways into jiu-jitsu, from a white belt curriculum to a dedicated no-gi school. Use those differences to make a short list that fits the hours you actually have.

01

Unity: a clear starting point on West 14th Street

Unity Jiu Jitsu lists gi and no-gi training alongside white belt fundamentals, wrestling and competition training. Its entrance is at 144 West 14th Street, Stair Door A, in the basement of the Pratt building. The specific entrance matters when you are arriving for the first time with a training bag.

For a newcomer, the useful distinction is the white belt pathway. Ask which session to book and how it connects to the wider timetable as you gain experience. An experienced visitor can make a different inquiry: describe your level and preferred format, then ask which class suits your visit. The presence of competition training does not tell you that every class follows the same pace.

02

Renzo Gracie Academy: choose the program before the time slot

Renzo Gracie Academy's Manhattan headquarters is at 224 West 30th Street. The academy lists Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Submission Grappling and KidJitsu as distinct programs. That gives adults and parents separate starting points when researching the school.

If you want to train in the gi, ask specifically about the BJJ class appropriate to your experience. If you want submission grappling, confirm the format and requirements for that session. Parents should use the children's program information rather than an adult timetable to plan a visit. The academy also links its schedule and visitor information from its official site; read those before packing, especially if you are visiting another team for the day.

03

10th Planet NYC: a focused no-gi option

10th Planet NYC identifies itself as a no-gi academy. Its FAQ directs people with little or no experience to Intro to Jiu Jitsu and welcomes visiting students from other schools. The same page lists its current address as 35 West 43rd Street, fourth floor.

This is a useful option to investigate when you already know you want to train without a gi. The FAQ specifies a rashguard and grappling shorts, with spats or leggings also accepted, and says showers are available. Check the full clothing rules and confirm the session before going. A school welcoming visitors still needs to know your experience and the class you intend to attend.

04

Build a training week you can keep

Compare the route from wherever you will actually leave for class. A convenient trip from home may be awkward from your office, and the return journey matters too. Add changing and shower time when testing a lunchtime plan. For an evening class, check the whole journey against your normal finish time at work.

Before choosing a membership, identify two realistic weekly sessions and a backup. Ask how a first lesson is organized, when beginners join live rounds and what equipment is required. If you are looking for an open mat, get a direct answer about visitor access and booking; a timetable label alone does not settle either. Your first visit should leave you knowing which class you would return to next.
